July 2024 – daylilies part 3

I just couldn’t resist taking more photos. The lilies really are gorgeous this year – so full and lush. I decided to count how many different ones I have – 102, soon to be 103 since a friend just dug one for me! Don’t worry, I won’t post pix of all 103. Enjoy.

  1. 103?! Goodness! At least they are not too obtrusive individually. I got 17 cultivars of banana, which may not sound like many, but each one gets quite large, and one is Musa ingens, which is the biggest species of Musa in the World, and can grow more than sixty feet tall! We could accommodate many more daylilies, but probably do not have any more than six or so here, and of those, only two are numerous.

    • Crazy number, but they all blend in quite nicely – and are so tightly planted, I don’t need to weed. This time of year (when its hot and humid) that’s a treat. Tropicals are tough here in Massachusetts. I grow brugmansia, elephant ears, cannas, agapanthus, orchid cactus, plumeria and agave but they all have to come into the basement in October and go mostly dormant until April when they can go back outside again

      • Plumeria is impressive. I do not grow those even here. I keep bringing cuttings back from near Los Angeles, but then I give them to neighbors who do not mind protecting them through winter. There are a few that I intend to grow in the future, but I would prefer to find a spot to grow them outside first. Even then, I will keep some potted. Frosts are mild here, but can kill some tropical species.
